overview
Loves Notes is the modern antidote to dating app swiping. Love Notes allows singles to explore places they already enjoy going to and lets them discover other people's commentary; emphasizing a person's personality, instead of their appearance. Love Notes puts the serendipity and magic back into dating, infusing the magic of uncertainty back into human connection. It's a form of Missed Connections.

Project summary

The Problem

People want to meet romantic partners naturally in person, but don’t always know how to break the ice and initiate conversation.

How might we help connect single people by providing opportunities to naturally share their personalities in a real-life setting?

The Solution

An Augmented Reality (AR) experience that allows singles to meet in person by discovering commentary left behind by other people and connecting in a real life setting.

Location, Location, Location!

For AR to have a viable use case, the location must be one that is:
1. visual
2. a solitary activity
[Making an art museum a prime location to display the solution.]

The Anatomy of a Note

To incentivize an immediate meetup, notes expire after 2 hours to keep matches in the nearby area. This shelf life also curbs overpopulation.

To avoid impacting the viewing experience of the location, notes populate one by one as a user approaches a piece of art.

Notes are tagged with emojis to provide viewers the emotional tone of what they are about to read.

Notes that have been read recess and lower in opacity; while selected notes grow and are at full opacity.

Discreet Gestures in a public setting

Browse notes discreetly with eye tracking, then use subtle hand motions to capture triggers.

Don't tell me who you are;
show me who you are.

research + synthesis

What people have to say

To gauge a vast array of experience and attitude, I interviewed 15 people (of all genders). I inquired about how they met romantic interests, frustrations they had in dating, and successes they've had–both on dating apps and without.

key insights

01
There needs to be an established setting to meet someone in person.
02
It's hard to initiate and break the ice.
03
People feel connection in different ways.
04
Discrepancy between the perception of an app profile and reality of the person.

Storyboard

With countless iterations of the storyboard, and showing it to as many people as possible, it became clear I was trying to do too much. In order to get my concept down pat, I needed to "kill your darlings" and pair it down to make sure the basic interactions were possible.
Next steps

Making it a reality

In taking this project further our next steps would be as follows:
  1. Build prototype and test (with particular attention to learnability of interactions)
  2. Better establish brand personality and branding
  3. Explore parameters of location eligibility
